: On the Production of Pictures and Books at Bruckmann
Publishers in Munich, 1858-1945 - Part 2: 1918-1945
This article examines the evolution of the publishing house
founded by and named after Friedrich Bruckmann in 1858. Of primary
interest are the companys products, which ranged from
original photographs in practical folders to illustrated luxury
publications and modern illustrated books. The focus is on the
distribution of (original and printed) photographs, and
consequently on the prototypical formation and evolution of a
photographic publishing house. Part 1 (1858-1918) looked mainly at
the fast-paced innovations in printing technology, which are
characteristic of the 19th Century and which forcefully
established new marketing channels and production options. The
second part (1918-1945) primarily analyses the ideological
function and the methods of functionalising images in books.
Together, the two articles thus attempt to make an exemplary
contribution to the history of photography as a history of media.

Digital Storage: Long-Term Archiving of Audio-Visual Content -
An Overview
In recent years, analogue storage media have significantly lost
importance for the storage of audio-visual content. However, there
are many answers to the question of which digital alternatives are
suitable for long-term storage. The options include optical disks,
hard disks, magnetic tapes, and the so-called cloud.
These are described in brief in this article. Despite the
differences between these storage media, common to all is the fact
that they require constant care and inspection of the contents in
order to ensure that the data can be read-and will remain
readable. A single copy is insufficient for long-term
preservation.

Press Photography in Cameroon: Inventory, Digitization and
Conservation of the State Photograph Archive
More than half a century since their founding and at the end of
the age of analogue photography, many press photograph archives in
sub-Saharan Africa find themselves in a state that calls for
urgent salvage. This article describes a project on digitization
and inventory of the state press photograph archive in Anglophone
Cameroon, that is financed by the Endangered Archives Programme
and the Swiss Federal Office of Culture. The project is based on
the conviction that the continued existence of the archive can
ultimately only be secured by means of new and dynamic uses of its
holdings. This could be driven by improved access to the archive
by means of depositing copies of the digitized finding aids and a
part of the negatives in various Cameroonian and European
institutions. In the long term, this project will have to be
supported by research ventures and regional and international
research partnerships.
