Photographic Negatives: Preserve or Restore? Why photographic
negatives require their own set of conservation ethics
In recent years, digital imaging techniques have made chemical
restoration treatments recede into the background. This essay
examines situations in which preservation should take preference
over restoration; at which point methods become useful that are
used for securing and displaying cultural property in the form of
photographic negatives; and to what ex-tent ethical issues of
restoration must take the specificity of photographic negatives as
objects and information carriers into account.

Photography for the Masses: On the early history of
photomechanical printing processes in the context of the
Photographic Society of Vienna 1864-1883 (Part I)
This article unfolds the intricate history of photomechanical
printing processes-with its many wrong turns and disappointment-as
it presents itself in the first twenty years of the
Photographische Correspondenz, the publication of the Photographic
Society Vienna, founded in 1861. The urgent need for combining
photography and the printing press was attended to by three
approaches: planographic printing, i.e. photolithography,
Woodburytype, and collotype; the intaglio processes
photogalvanography and photogravure; and relief printing with
photoxylography, zinc etching and autotype (letterpress halftone).
At the end of the 19th century, and thanks to the cooperation of a
large number of researchers from different countries, the autotype
gradually found its way into journals and books and established
itself as the long-awaited visual medium of mass communication.
This article (and Part II in the following issue) traces the
practical experiments and processes as well as the role of the
Photographic Society in the international discourse.

From A to Z: Photography in the Ruhr Museum
Kaiser Wilhelm and Frank Zappa, miners and brides, swimming
pools and school classes, town halls and department stores, war
propaganda and tobacco advertising, and cities, land-scapes, and
rivers-just some examples of the thousands of subjects that can be
found in the photograph collection of the Ruhr Museum: negatives
on glass, celluloid and polyester, transparencies, and old and new
prints of various processes and formats. A pictorial memory of the
region, the photograph archive offers manifold insights into the
work of photographers from the mid 19th century until today; in
addition, the development of the medium and not least the task of
collecting and preserving are explored. The almost inexhaustible
wealth of black-and-white and colour images can provide answers to
almost all queries about the pictorial tradition of the history of
the Ruhr area.

Photography at the Badische Landeskunstschule around 1930: Karl
Hubbuch, Liselotte Billigheimer, Anton Weber, and others
Despite a broad interest in photography in the 1920s in
Germany, the photographic activities at the Badische
Landeskunstschule (Regional Art School Baden) in Karlsruhe
were not well known. While the work of two of the former students,
Hilde Isai/Hubbuch and Ellen Rosenberg/Auerbach, has already been
published a number of times, the estates of their classmates, who
were artistically active both behind and in front of the camera,
have only been explored in recent years. As a result, the names
Liselotte Billigheimer/Grschebina, Marta Kuhn-Weber, Erwin Spuler
and Anton Weber, and with them their in part startling photographs
that are not all associated with the Neues Sehen
movement, can only now be correctly attributed and properly
appreciated.

Photographs and more... Digital integration of the photograph
collection into the Basel Mission Archive / mission21
The digitisation of the photograph collection of the Basel
Mission and the launch of the first website in 2003 stand for the
beginning of a new era in the use and exploration of the archive.
Integration into the International Mission Photography Archive
(IMPA) network underlined this trend and lent further momentum to
the project. Following completion of these milestones, two other
digitisation projects were begun; hand in hand with the already
digitised photographs, these projects were designed to promote the
potential and the opening of the archives. The digitisation of
historical maps, sketches and blueprints, as well as finding aids
expands electronic access to the holdings of the archive for an
international audience.
