Drones over the County: Aerial Documentation by the County
Archive of Esslingen
Besides safeguarding all documents from the district
administration office and the municipalities, the Esslingen County
Archive is also responsible for the documentation of the general
development of the district. The picture collection forms an
important part of this documentation; it can be used to illustrate
the growing congestion of the urban area, for example. Aerial
photographs made regularly of the county territory and of
individual objects form a key aspect of this endeavour. Depending
upon requirements, different flight techniques are used; a
propeller-driven drone is a comparatively new method. Particularly
for photographing buildings and smaller areas, or for flying
within settlements or zones with flight restrictions, drones offer
advantages over all other methods.

Cimelia Photographica: Dealing with Historic
Photographs in Archives
Over the past years, interest in photographs held in archives
has increased significantly; these photographs were originally
taken for documentation purposes and without artistic aspiration,
but they have by now surpassed this function and become autonomous
objects of research. At present, this interest is apparent not
only in new fields of research at universities and research
institutes, but also in the work of the photo archives themselves.
Apart from dealing with care, preservation and inventory, it is
becoming increasingly important to study own holdings from new
points of view. The combination of questions of the histories of
photography and of science creates fundamentally new challenges
for the work of photograph archives, which must make a compromise
between the needs of archival management and research. These
issues are discussed on the basis of actual examples from everyday
work at the Photothek of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in
Florence (KHI) in the context of the project Cimelia
Photographica.

What Remains of the Land: The Picture Archive of
the Volkskundliche Landesaufnahme in the Volkskunde Museum of the
Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf
Foundation
From 1958 onwards, the Volkskundliche Landesaufnahme (Folkloric
Survey) Schleswig-Holstein was the first nationwide scientific
documentation project on cultural anthropology, which, during the
ensuing period, served as a model on a regional and an
international level. The photographs resulting out of this
large-scale project, led by Professor Dr. Arnold Lühning
(1923-2002), are until now hardly even known to experts: between
1958 and 1988, over 45,000 photographs were taken that record the
profound changes of rural life in the decades following World War
II. In 2011, the Volkskunde Museum of the Schleswig-Holsteinische
Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf Foundation reconstructed
Lühnings photographic view of the state of
Schleswig-Holstein in the special exhibition What Remains of
the Land. The corresponding catalogue is the first printed
overview of this photographic survey, and it contains a small, but
representative selection of images. The museum is currently
planning the digitization and scientific investigation of this
valuable photograph archive.

The Schlesiger Picture Archive in the Karlsruhe City Archives:
A Photographic Estate from 1949 to 1990
The estate of the photographer duo Horst and Lilo Schlesiger
reflects?-from different points of view and by means of different
points of access-the public, political and social life of the city
of Karlsruhe: daily life, leisure time and the working
environment, and in part also the fates of inhabitants from 1949
to 1990. Atmospheric nature and landscape photographs supplement
the collection. This article presents the photographers and their
photographs, the modes of use of the archive and related
experiences, the condition of the holdings and preservation
measures, inventory, and online access.

Picture Archive and Monument Preservation: The Picture
Collection of the State Agency for Monument Preservation in
Saxony
The picture collection of the State Agency for Monument
Preservation in Saxony retains all photographs taken and/or
collected in the context of its legal functions: these include
images of work in progress in the agency, graphic documentation
and inventory photographs. Split up archives and estates also
partly come together here in order to be utilized in the context
of new functions, publications or exhibitions. The holdings serve
mainly as working material for the everyday tasks within the
agency and are also available to external users with private or
public interest. Many of the photographs are of inestimable value
since they are irrecoverable documents of times gone by. In order
to protect and preserve these photographs, the holdings have been
undergoing conservation and long-term archiving efforts since
2003. Within this context, the traditional practice of making
topographically sorted pictorial index cards has been maintained,
and the historical glass plate negatives are being conserved,
scanned and incorporated into the internal database.

Photography of Industrial Architecture: Basel, for Example
For the past two academic terms, the art history course of the
University of Basel has been preparing an exhibition in
co-operation with the Novartis company archive. This collaboration
is particularly productive since the company archive boasts of
immense holdings of photographs, the oldest of which date back to
the second half of the 19th century. This is a result of the
Basler Chemische Industrie having continuously photographically
documented their buildings since this time. This process continues
into the present: students of the Visual Communication Institute
(VISCOM) of the Fachhochschule der Nordwestschweiz have been
photographically tracking the emergence and development of the
Novartis campus since almost ten years. Co-operation was therefore
the obvious choice, whereby the art-historical side concentrated
on the historical photographs and the VISCOM on contemporary
photography.
