Art-historical Image Collections: Archive Photographs from the
Perspective of Art-historical Research
Among the commonplace, yet remarkable occurrences in scientific
research is that new questions can open up even if nothing has
really changed in the material matter that is being investigated.
The trigger for such a shift can be either the exhaustion of a
paradigm question, thus a process integral to research, or
technological leaps that render a to date neglected object
suddenly threatened by loss, thereby making it appear to be
particularly interesting for the historian and/or historical
research as well as for the collector. This is the situation we
are facing with the replacement of analogue photography by digital
photography.

Turn about! Photographs in Archives in the Age of
their Digitizability: a Material Turn
In the age of their digitizability, analogue photographs and
archival structures are being re-evaluated. Over the past years
some authors have pointed out that photographs may not merely be
reduced to their visual content, but instead that they are
material objects with both a spatial and a temporal dimension. As
such, they possess their own biography, which begins with their
production and continues within the context of archives. These
archives are, for their part, and in regards to their materiality
and their use in a historical context, autonomous and singular
structures, and not just the sum of the photographs held therein.
Photo archives are not neutral storage facilities; rather, the
principles and techniques of archiving (e.g. classification,
cataloguing, listing) reach into the biography of the photographic
object - and with this into its reception. On the basis of these
considerations, this article concentrates on the consequences of
this material turn for archival practice and for
dealing with photographic material on a scholarly level.

Picture History / Picture Stories: On Contextualising
Photographs from the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg
On the basis of the extensive holdings of historic photographs,
which-largely unnoticed to date-are held by the Bildarchiv Foto
Marburg, strategies are being developed for dating and
identification, leading to the re-contextualisation of apparently
disparate images. This is being carried out in an exemplary manner
on several convolutes; it thereby communicates photo-historical
insights into the history of photographic art reproduction and
photographs of topographic views. Early photographs of works of
art of the Renaissance by Fratelli Alinari as well as topographic
views of the Alsace region by Adolphe Braun, which come from the
so-called Art-historical Apparatus of the University
of Marburg, are presented. In addition, a chronological series of
early gallery works from the holdings of the print
room of the State Art Gallery Karlsruhe is presented, as well as
travel photographs from Sweden by Johannes Jaeger.

The Photographic Heritage of the Stasi: An Interim Note on the
Occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Building of the Berlin
Wall
The photographs of the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit
(Stasi) of the former GDR give today's viewer a glimpse into the
secret service's modes of thinking and handling. After nearly 20
years of inventorying, these unique sources on the history of the
GDR are now, to a large part, available for use under the
conditions of the Stasi Records Law. This article describes the
treatment of the photographs, the modalities of their use, and the
Stasi's use of photography as an operational technical and
criminalistic instrument. Finally, some of these photographs are
exemplary presented on the occa-sion of the 50th anniversary of
the building of the Berlin Wall.
