Glass Negative Holdings of Kleu in the Neuss City Archives:
Conservation and Preservation Plan
The Kleu collection of approximately 20,000 dry plate negatives
in the Neuss City Archives constitutes an important witness to the
history of the city of Neuss. Due to poor processing and
unsuitable former storage conditions, the negatives suffer from
mechanical and chemical deterioration. The causes of deterioration
were precisely determined through the use of scientific analysis
methods, and with this information a conservation and preservation
plan for the entire collection was made. On the basis of
experimental studies of a number of different treatment methods,
concrete proposals for the restoration and preservation of the
glass negatives were made.

Detective Work: An Acquisition by the Deutsches
Technikmuseum
This article describes an investigation carried out by museum
curator Gerhard Kemner to bring light into the dark surrounding
the date of manufacture, the manufacturer himself and the owner of
an historic sliding double-box camera from the earliest era of
photography. Kemners research gives reason to believe that
this may be one of the last earliest German cameras to still
exist.
Well Thought Out is Half the Battle: On the Conception of a
Digital Picture Archive
Anyone interested in making a photograph collection digitally
available must address a multitude of different questions in order
to be able to develop a concept for his or her project. This
article outlines the fundamental approach to this task instead of
going into intricate detail. First, goals must be defined and the
given situation analysed. In consequence, the target state can be
conceived. In the context of a picture archive, this means above
all describing future workflows and modes of use, as well as
developing a digitization concept and a plan for inventory and
content mining. Only then has the basis been formed for the
selection of archive software and the implementation of the
project.

The Allure of Eternity: Safekeeping on Microfilm
In the Federal Republic of Germany, microfilm has been used for
reformatting archival materials for nearly five decades, and three
generations of archivists are familiar with this procedure. As a
result of last years collapse of the City Archive of
Cologne, for the first time microfilms would have had to been
retrieved from the Central Salvage Depot of the German
Federal Microfilm Safekeeping, because the originals must
currently, at least in part, be regarded as lost. The often evoked
emergency finally hit! However, emergency planning was not
completely ready for this situation: there was no detailed
procedure for dealing with the microfilmed copies of the
originals. The technical procedure for removal of microfilms is
well known, since it is carried out several times a year in order
to test the deposited films. However, it must still be clarified
on a technical and political level what is to follow after
removal, for example how the public can regain access to the
films. This situation also shows that basically none of the
involved parties really ever believed that this could happen. It
is likely, however, that the films will not have to be retrieved
at all: the director of the City Archive of Cologne had adhered to
one of the fundamental preservation recommendations by storing the
master microfilms outside of the archive building. They have
therefore all survived. But the overall loss is still terrible:
The archives infrastructure has been almost completely
destroyed, and a large part of the holdings was damaged. The over
6,000 rolls of microfilm in Cologne may seem to be an extensive
collection, but in view of the total damage it is but a small
part. Has the concept of preservation microfilming
failed?

On the History of Film-Based Colour Photography and Related
Areas: Publications by Gert Koshofer 1996-2010
Since 1963, Gert Koshofer has been writing about the market,
technology and history of photography and motion picture film, in
particular about colour materials. His most important publications
are the three-volume Farbfotografie (Munich 1981) and
COLOR. Die Farben des Films (West Berlin 1988), a
supplementary to the 1988 Berlin Film Festival. Since the
compilation of this authors publications from 1981 to 1995
(those that appeared after his three-volume book
Farbfotografie came out), which previously appeared
under same title as this article in Rundbrief
Fotografie, many more articles have been published. Often
written on request of film manufacturers, these articles have been
primarily dedicated to company anniversaries. The following is an
annotated listing.
