Restoration of a Photo Button: Structure and Signs of Aging
Within the context of a two-week project at the University of
Applied Sciences in Berlin the authors treated a torn photo
button. The treatment was especially challenging due to both the
largely unknown structure and condition of the photo button and
the fact that only one publication on the treatment of a similar
object from the USA exists. For these reasons, in this project
comparable objects were examined first. This analysis revealed
much about the structure, materiality, and signs of deterioration
of photo buttons. As a result, it was possible to conceive and
carry out conservation treatment on the original object.

Explosive Photographer's Estates? Considerations on Dealing
with Cellulose Nitrate Photographic Materials
It is common to find cellulose nitrate materials alongside
cellulose acetate in collections and archives that contain
photographic negatives from the time of the earliest flexible
films up to the beginning of the 1960s. This problem is
particularly acute with photographers estates from this
period, and it will prevail in the near future as further estates
are acquired. In Germany an open discussion of this topic is
obstructed by a rigorous, undifferentiated appropriation of
nitrate materials under the explosives law. Thus the alleged
threat of explosion hovers above possible strategies for handling
photographers estates. The following accounts on this topic
may be seen as a contribution to the still urgently needed
discussion on handling cellulose nitrate materials. The situation
in Germany demonstrates that the reassessment of the legal
specifications or at least of their interpretation would appear to
be important and possible.

The Rheinishe Photographic Archive of the City of Cologne: A
Service Provider for Cologne Museums and a Department of a
Documentation Center for Art
The Rheinishe Photographic Archive of the City of Cologne (RBA)
belongs to the largest public art and architecture picture
archives in Germany. From the outset the main goal of the Archive
was the documentation of art by its own photographers. In the
1970s the Archive was merged with the Art and Museum Library of
the City of Cologne (KMB) with the goal of creating a
Documentation Center for 20th century fine arts. The RBA retained
its parallel work as a service provider for all city museums,
however, by continuing to be responsible for the entire
photographic documentation of museum objects and for the long-term
archiving and marketing of the photos. Public access to the
holdings is always a central concern since the RBA is a public
research institution.

Digital Photographic Archives in Vienna: Inventory Methods and
Finding Aids from the Perspective of Collection Management
Within the context of the course of studies digital
collection management at the Danube University Krems
(supervision by Oliver Grau, University of Bern, and Harald
Krämer, University of Konstanz) the task of this project was
to compare digital photographic archives of Viennese institutions
from the perspective of the external user. The structures,
categorization and indexing methods along with their manifestation
in the object data records and respective input fields, search
fields and output forms of the various database management systems
were examined. This article discusses parameters relevant to the
politics of collection management on the basis of an investigation
of the Bildarchiv Austria (Austrian National Library) and the
photograph collection at the Albertina.
