Concretion of the Elusive: A Research Project at the inter
media art institute (imai)
The two-year research project 'Concretion of the elusive:
Questions of preservation and re-performing media art
installations' at the imai (inter media art institute) commenced
at the end of 2007. The goal of this project, which is funded by
the Gerda Henkel Foundation, is to develop methodological
guidelines for the preservation and presentation of media art
installations. Research is empirically based on case studies that
are carried out at imai in cooperation with conservators and
technicians. The first research year will conclude with the
conference 'Media Art in North Rhine-Westphalia: Holdings,
Preservation, Presentation' on October 23, 2008. The final results
of project are expected to be presented in an international
symposium and in a publication at the end of 2009.

Between Science and Relic Cult: Death Masks and Photography in
the 19th Century
Analogies of photography to death masks have been and are
increasingly being found in the context of the theory of
photography, among others by André Bazin, Susan Sontag, and
Rosalind Krauss. The comparisons usually revolve around the
process of formation, the indexical semiotic character of quasi
auto-poetic images, and the satisfaction of a psychological need
for authenticity. Such theorisations require historical
consultation and verification, however.

Pictures of Migration: The Photograph Archive of the
Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration in Germany
e.V.
The association 'Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration in
Germany' (DOMiD) was established in 1990 under the name
'Documentation Centre and Museum of Migration from Turkey' (DOMiT)
with the goal of documenting the history of migration from Turkey
and anchoring it in German historiography. For this, documents and
memorabilia of migrants were collected. Over the course of time,
the initial emphasis on Turkey was expanded to include numerous
other countries of recruitment. A significant portion of the
collection consists of approximately 4,500 personal photographs
that have been digitised and, to a large part, indexed. These
pictures have been shown, among other items, in various
exhibitions on the topic of migration, most recently in the
substantial exhibition 'Migration Project'. The DOMiD was one of
four participating partners for this exhibition, which, after four
years of preparation involving a number of renowned artists, was
shown simultaneously at four different locations in the inner city
of Cologne from September 2005 to May 2006. The homepage of the
association rightly advertises that its archive 'holds a
collection of testimonials of the social and everyday life and the
cultural-historical aspects of immigration to Germany that is
unique nationwide'. It is therefore all the more gratifying that
after years of financial insecurity under which the archive
suffered its continued existence finally seems assured following a
state parliament decision in March of 2008.

The Federal Archives Online: 'Providing Access to Knowledge,
Tapping Resources, Promoting an Understanding of History'
On September 11, 2007, the Picture Archives of the Federal
Archives (Bundesarchiv) launched its online portal featuring
60,000 photographs, posters, and aerial photographs. The Digital
Picture Archive was formally and festively activated during a
press conference in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin. 700,000
hits and 170 registrations for the web shop within the first three
days speak for the significance and the rapid acceptance of the
online picture archive. This article describes the functionality
of the website and illustrates the finding aids for users, the
research tools, and the means of purchasing photographs, posters,
or aerial photographs.

'The Picture Portal of the Art Museums: A New Service Offered
by the Picture Agency of the Stiftung Preußischer
Kulturbesitz
Every picture researcher who orders pictures from museums for
publication purposes knows how difficult and time consuming it
often is to obtain master copies for printing. This situation
should now change for those ordering pictures from major German
art museums. The picture agency bpk, part of the Stiftung
Preußischer Kulturbesitz, is a professional service provider
for leading German art museums that has created a presence on the
Internet Bildagentur
der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz. The portal
allows for registered users from the media, business, and science
to research images online and, for a fee, directly download them
as high-quality, printable files.
