Light Boxes and Large Formats: Supervision of the Exhibition
'Jeff Wall: Belichtung'
The exhibition 'Jeff Wall: Belichtung' was on show at the
Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin from November 3, 2007 to January 20,
2008. The show had been assembled by Jeff Wall specifically for
the Deutsche Guggenheim and included, for the first time, four of
the Canadian artist's large format black-and-white photographs.
This new group of works was presented in combination with five
earlier photographs: gelatine silver prints and large format
transparencies in light boxes that correspond with the new work
both in form and theme. This article describes the technical
issues and questions related to conservation that were encountered
during the installation of the show. It also includes pointers for
the chronological workflow of the installation of an exhibition
from the point of view of a conservator.

Half-Product Negatives and Reject Vintages: Notes on Value in
an Archival Problem Zone
The following article is not understood as scientifically
founded investigation within a broad area of specialty. It is,
instead, a brief and very personal (and therefore not free of
polemics and vanity) interim evaluation of the transition between
so-called analogue and digital photography and its practice in the
archival setting, seen from the perspective of a producer of
photographic images. The article is based on the self-image of an
applied arts photographic practice, falsely often called
handicraft, with which the author grew up and to whose first
critics he has counted himself since the end of the 1970's. This
review is addressed to those readers of the 'Rundbrief
Fotografie', who feel that the mythical transfiguration of the
photographic act is rightfully as unfamiliar as a catholic mass in
Latin; who, on the other hand, have also not quite lost sight of
the status that historical picture archives have as a reference
for future developments of thought. The following observations
may, in part, appear to be equally anecdotal as vulgarly
sociologic and are therefore also made without further references;
they are carried by the epistemic anticipation of sense in
inventorying and preserving cultural property, at least in the
form of communicative agreements in favour of the two or three
coming generations that we can be aware of in our own lifetime.

The Film Museum Potsdam: Preserving, Researching, and
Exhibiting Historical Motion Picture Film Technology
The Archive of the Film Museum Potsdam, inconspicuously located at
the edge of Sanssouci Park, accommodates one of the largest
special collections on motion picture technology in Germany.
Within the Archive's emphasis on the production site Babelsberg
and the cinematic history of east and central Germany, objects are
documented in their unique and characteristic features and are
embedded in the context of their social uses. This principle is
also the basis for activities within the conservation department,
in that devices are preserved in the condition of their last use.
A contemporary presentation of historical film technology is given
by exhibitions in the entrance hall, special shows, access to the
300 square meter open vault, and the networking of various
holdings in the Internet.
