The Book of Idols: Clichés-verre by Bruno Schulz
Three recent independent scientific investigations have focused
on the hybrid process of the cliché-verre. This article
summarizes the main points of the author's thesis about the
Ukrainian-Polish artist Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), who, following
the introduction of the technique in the 1850s and 1860s, belongs
to one of the rare users of the process in the 20th century. In
this sense, this article extends the review of the Dresden
Exhibition, also in this issue of the journal, to a panoramic
outlook onto a technical process that was used rarely, but that is
found on the frontier of drawing, photography, graphic arts and
photomontage in terms of the history of media. W.H.

The Rediscovery of the Photographic Studio Seidel: The
Photographic Memory of the Bohemian Woods in Cesky
Krumlov/Krummau
The Research and Development Fund of the south Bohemian town of
Krummau (Ceskokrumlovsky rozvojovy fond spol. s r.o.) is currently
examining the holdings of the photographic studio Seidel, which
was run by Josef Seidel and his son Franz from approx. 1888 to
1949 in Krummau (Cÿesky´ Krumlov). The Funds acquired the
studio house with its wholly preserved studio equipment and
holdings of over 140,000 negatives and positives in April 2005.
The photographic objects and with them the entire inventory were
registered and removed first, since the building had to be
urgently reconstructed. The renovation and reconstruction are now
running at full speed, as are the preparations for the planned
"Muzeum Fotoateliér Seidel". After a nearly 60 year
interruption, the doors of the photographic studio Seidel in
Krummau will be open again for visitors in the spring of
2008.

What is Where, and Who has What? www.fotoerbe.de: Working
towards a Nationwide Overview of Collections
A comprehensive overview of historical photograph holdings in
Germany is not available. An all-inclusive compilation of the
entire information of all holdings in all archives, museums and
other institutions of cultural heritage is an undertaking that can
hardly be mastered. The attempt is worthwhile, however, even if
the goal cannot be achieved! The Internet project www.fotoerbe.de
would like to make a beginning. Information pertaining to the
holdings is compiled and made accessible in various ways.
