Development of a Consolidation Technique for Silver Gelatin
Photographs: The Conservation of Water and Mould Damaged
Photographs at the Buchenwald Memorial
The use of aerosols for the consolidation of water and mould
damaged black and white silver gelatin prints using diluted
aqueous adhesive solutions was investigated. Water damaged
photographs show various forms of degradation. The gelatin in the
emulsion may depolymerise due to biological deterioration. As a
result, the remaining image is endangered and should be
consolidated. For the consolidation of degraded gelatin emulsions,
aqueous adhesives are preferred. Problems with the consolidation
of biologically degraded gelatin emulsions are based on hydrolytic
and enzymatic deterioration which cause increased water
sensitivity. The technique of aerosol application enables a
consolidation treatment using a low amount of moisture. The
consolidation involved the use of aerosols to apply diluted
solutions of gelatin, methyl cellulose and funori. Different
concentrations were tested. The wetting capabilities of the
consolidants can be improved by pre-humidification using a
GORE-TEX ® sandwich and by adding up to 30 % of ethanol.
Visual alterations of the surface after the consolidation
treatment could not be observed. Mechanical tests were used to
evaluate the extent of consolidation. Results show that the use of
aerosols ascertains adequate stability of degraded emulsions. A
gelatin solution of 1 % applied four times lead to the best
results. A methyl cellulose solution of 0.5 % is satisfactory. The
extent of consolidation achieved with the application of funori to
pre-humidified photographs is comparable to methyl cellulose.
Photographs may be stabilized to the extent that they can be used
as historic source without detrimental changes to their visual
appearance, and that they can be stored in paper
envelopes.

The "Optical Wunderkammer" in the Altonaer Museum: A Short
History of the Image: from the Raree Show to the Laterna Magica to
Early Film
The '"Optical Cabinet of Curiosities" ("Optische Wunderkammer")
in the Altonaer Museum is a focused introduction into the early
history of film, which, at the same time, proves to be an analysis
of the media history of the image. By these means, those aspects
related to images and media in the museum collections, which until
now were scattered throughout different departments, are
experiencing a recapitulatory appreciation for the first time. In
that the museum's own objects are shown together with loans from
the collection of the film producer Werner Nekes, the 2005/2006
exhibition "Schaulust. Sehmaschinen, optische Theater & andere
Spektakel. Die Sammlung Werner Nekes im Altonaer Museum" presents
the visitors with a concentrate of this fusion. The question of
the media history of the image also proves to be pivotal point, at
which, in the course of a reform and repositioning process, the
Altonaer Museum's own collections are subjected to renewed
examination.

The Digital Photograph Archive of the Buchenwald Memorial: A
Contribution to Memorial Work on the Internet
After over thirty years of collection activity, the Buchenwald
Memorial is in the possession of more than 10,000 historic
photographs. With support from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
(DFG), it began to digitize this collection in 2004 and recently
made approximately 1,000 images available on the internet. With
this pilot project, Buchenwald is the first of the large
concentration camp memorials to make a part of its collection
accessible online. That photographic images are the first to be
online is surely a result of their increasing significance as a
historical source. This has been a recent development. On this
year's Holocaust commemoration day, January 27, 2007, the site
registered over 21,000 visitors. The following review gives an
overview of the online photograph archive, which was tested with
random sampling, and it discusses the aspect of the use of new
media in the work of memorials in particular.

Long-term Photographic Observation, Schlieren 2005-2020:
Photography and Regional Development at the Institute for
Contemporary Art, Zurich University of the Arts
A focal point of teaching and research at the Zurich University
of the Arts (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste ZHdK) is the
role of photography as a medium for the visualization of regional
development. Professor Ulrich Görlich and Meret Wandeler have
been heading the research project "Long-term Photographic
Observation, Schlieren 2005-2020" since 2005. In the context of
this project, the use of photography for the observation and
analysis of regional development processes is examined. A further
project is planned in cooperation with the Collection of
Landscapes and City Views (Sammlung Landschafts- und
Ortsansichten) of the Swiss National Library (Schweizerische
Nationalbibliothek) for 2008. The research project "Archive of
Locality" examines how artistic strategies - working with archives
and use of existing images - can be applied to the development of
theme-based picture archives. The goal is the development of a
multi-perspective view of locality, landscape, and habitat, which
does justice to the complexity of the new spatial phenomena.
