Photographic Cellulose Nitrate Negatives: The Cellulose Nitrate
Programme of the City of Paris (Part I)
Following a short historical outline, the first part of this
article compiles the risks associated with cellulose nitrate
materials, then summarizes the legal framework and standards to
which these negatives are subject in France. Subsequently, the
"Nitrate Programme" of the city of Paris is presented.
Conservation surveys were carried out in order to locate nitrate
materials in collections, determine the extent of their presence,
and evaluate their condition. Once an overview of the problem had
been gained, a comprehensive plan of action, which will be
described in the second part of this article, was prepared. The
cellulose nitrate and acetate negatives are mixed up together in
the collection holdings and are subject to a similar
self-destruction process. Therefore, the cellulose acetate
negatives were also surveyed.

Digital Slide Libraries and Image Archives: Researching (Art
Historical) Images on the Internet in 2006
Fifteen years after the "invention" of the World Wide Web,
countless image databases and networks may be found online. Next
to freely accessible databases, which sometimes resemble a tipped
over slide tray, associated databases and commercial picture
agencies, which may only be perused after payment of a (more or
less expensive) license fee, are available. Search results differ
noticeably in terms of image and data quality. Many databases
supply only thumbnail images with a meager quantity of associated
data. Some permit the download of higher resolution images,
usually following the payment of a fee. Some contain links within
the search results to museums that offer prints or high resolution
scans available for purchase. Digital slide libraries usually
contain supplementary on-line tools such as virtual portfolios,
light boxes, and presentations. Some systems also offer learning
modules for autodidactic study and methodology training.

Accessibility through an Image Database: The Map Collection and
Picture Archive of the Bavarian State Library
The Map Collection and Picture Archive of the Bavarian State
Library in Munich, made accessible as a database on the internet
in 2003, comprises portrait, view, landscape, and society
photography of the 19th and 20th centuries. The most frequented
section is the so-called Hoffmann Archive. To a large extent, this
archive contains images produced by Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf
Hitler's personal photographer, from the period of the Weimar
Republic to the Third Reich, holdings from the post-war period,
pictures which were partly taken by Hoffmann's son. There are, in
addition, smaller holdings of images by further photographers that
thematically fit into the Hoffmann Archive. By making this
pictorial material available, the Bavarian State Library does not
only meet its obligation to place it at the disposal of the
public. The archive is also a primary source that may be regarded
as remarkable in the context of scholarly investigation of
photography in the Nazi era, particularly since photographs in
general are steadily gaining importance as source material in
historical sciences studies.

Hirsmüller Museum of Photography: The Presentation of a
Working Photography Studio in a City Museum
The Hirsmüller Museum of Photography in Emmendingen, near
Freiburg i.Br., was opened on March 23, 2003. The museum presents
over 130 years of the use of photography and regional and local
history in the context of the history of the photography company
Hirsmüller. It is located in the refurbished third floor of
the margrave's palace, which has already been in use as a museum
of local history since 1920. In terms of room allocation and
through the use of original furnishings, the flow of galleries
reflect a working studio practice. Changing exhibits with works
from archives of the studio, which had been a family business for
four generations, are complemented by shows of the work of
contemporary photographers.
