The Dark Chamber: The 120th Anniversary of the
Photographic Academy at the Lette-Verein in Berlin
Women were taken on as trainees for the profession of
photographer for the first time in1890 at the Lette-Verein. A
double novelty! It was, indeed, already more than unusual that
women could enjoy any form of apprenticeship, and this one even
lead to a technical profession. Since then, numerous female
students (and since 1910 also males) have attended the
Photographic Academy, and not a few of them later also became
famous.

The Images of the Daguerre Triptych in Munich: A Description of
Three Obliterated Daguerreotypes
The picture of the Boulevard du temple in Paris that Louis
Jacques Mandé Daguerre took in 1839 was admired above all
for its accurate and detailed image. If one were to report on this
one of the first successful photographic depictions of a person
today, however, the description of the original daguerreotype
would give us a different picture than back then.
Together with two further plates from 1839, this icon of the
history of photography is held in the archives of the Bavarian
National Museum in Munich. Environmental conditions have left the
pictures on the plate surfaces barely visible, and an attempt at
restoration probably caused them to disappear for good.
Contemplation of the three plates makes one thus wonder whether
one can speak of (photographic) pictures at all any more.

Treatment for Photographs
Loose surface dust can be removed from dirty photographs by
means of forced air. Gelatine silver photographs are commonly
cleaned from more persistent dirt with water or alcohols,
primarily ethanol and 2-propanol. In this process, dirt particles
are removed to a large extent by gentle mechanical manipulation of
the surface. In case of the photographs of the Historical Archive
of the City of Cologne, which collapsed on March 3, 2009, the
situation is different, however: here the central problem lies in
the removal of building dust that lies on the print surface and
that is embedded within the emulsion. This dust has a range of
particle sizes and adheres, in part, very firmly onto and within
the photographic surface. In addition, conservators are faced with
large quantities of photographs that need treatment. This task
cannot be carried out with dry and wet cleaning methods commonly
used in paper and photograph conservation. For this reason,
experiments based on ultrasonic dip-cleaning were performed, and
airbrush techniques were modified.

The Multimedia Collections at the Universalmuseum Joanneum in
Graz: A Sketch of the History of an Institution
With its multimedia collections, the Universalmuseum Joanneum
in Graz was the only institute in Austria to transcend various
media in the late 1950s. Its eventful progression into a
full-fledged museum went hand-in-hand with handling audiovisual
materials as well as (documentary) photography in the
region of Styria. The history of this collection of photography,
sound and film, which, with more than 2.5 million objects, is the
largest in Styria, is given here along general lines; it is
evident that politico-cultural privilege of interpretation (see,
among others, the discourse about all-encompassing
collection mandates since the 1950s) is dependent on various
parameters: politics, people, network, institutional power,
zeitgeist, vision, money etc.
