Development of a Consolidation Technique for Silver Gelatin
Photographs: The Conservation of Water and Mould Damaged
Photographs at the Buchenwald Memorial
This article illuminates the little-known, atypical image
collection of the public City and Canton Library in Zug (Stadt-
und Kantonsbibliothek Zug). It is atypical in that it is situated
a library context, there is no systematic acquisition plan, the
approaches to inventory, storage, and hierarchy have developed
historically, and these approaches must urgently be adapted to the
current standards. In the following, an insight into our analysis
of the collection is provided, and, within this context, questions
pertaining to the history of the collection and its provenance,
the basic preservation of the objects, as well as a perspective
for possible uses and further developments of the picture archives
are raised. This report is based on the author's master's
thesis.

Keyword 'Cooperation': An Interim Report on the Digitization of
the Historic Photograph Collection of the University Library in
Kassel
In order to make it accessible to the public, the historic
photograph collection of the University Library in Kassel is
currently being digitized and its content inventoried with the
database ORKA, which is accessible through the internet. The
realization of this project is a result of close cooperation with
local institutions and experts within and outside of the library.
The collection will be available to the public in October 2007.
This report documents the state of our work in June 2007 and will
probably already be outdated by the time of its publication. When
the time comes, a link on the University Library homepage
(www.uni-kassel.de/bib) will connect you with the official
collection site.

Not Every Picture Says More than a Thousand Words: Some
Thoughts on the Archival Evaluation of Photograph Collections
The question of assessment has been one of the most intensively
discussed topics in the German field of archiving science in the
last years. The evaluation of photograph collections has, however,
mostly been excluded from this discussion. This does not mean,
though, that questions related to assessment do not play a role in
everyday life in photograph archives. On the contrary, quite a
number of archives already do have relevant experience in this
area. When making evaluation decisions these archives were,
however, particularly dependent on their own considerations;
guidelines for their decisions are missing to a large extent. For
this reason, the following article not only relays some
fundamental considerations for the evaluation of photographs, but
above all, it also compiles criteria that can be relevant for
evaluation decisions in practice.

Photogrammetric Usage of Image Archives: Reconstructions of
Space in the Preservation of Historic Monuments and Buildings
Albrecht Meydenbauer's field of architectural photogrammetry is
presented as an individual development within the general
emergence of the technical discipline of photogrammetry. Using the
Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) in Dresden as an example, the
significance that picture archives, historic photograph
collections, and the Meydenbauer photogrammetry archives have for
the restoration and reconstruction of cultural property is shown:
by following various procedures it is even possible to utilize
photographs that were not originally produced for photogrammetric
analysis; these may be useful, for example, for the recovery of
lost details of areas.
