Indexing/Preserving/Digitizing: The Glass Negatives of the St.
Antonyhütte Archive
The Rheinisches Industriemuseum of the Landschaftsverband
Rheinland acquired over 15,000 glass plate negatives from the
collection of the former Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) in
Oberhausen in the mid 1990's. An unexpected sponsorship made it
possible for the authors to prepare a proposal for the
digitization of the entire collection in 2003. Many questions
concerning goals and modalities of the digitization, the proposal
and the execution of the project were addressed. In this article,
the preservation, the cataloging, and the decision-making
considerations that preceeded digitization are presented in
detail. In addition, the necessary technical and the
organisational preparations as well as the execution of the work
are described. The initial cleaning of the negatives and the
technical details of the scanning, the digitization, and the data
adminstration workflow are also illustrated.

The Discovery of the Light Sensitivity of Silver Salts: A new
Dating of Johann Heinrich Schulze's Experiments
At the symposium on the occasion of the 300th birthday of
Johann Heinrich Schulze in Halle in 1987 the author presented
evidence that the famous physician and researcher of antiquity had
first published his discovery of the light sensitivity of silver
salts, so fundamental for the later development of photography, in
1719. This is eight years prior to the date that had been hitherto
accepted and repeatedly cited as a result of Eder's re-discovery
of Schulze's second publication. Since this correction of the
dating has remained widely unnoticed, we are publishing this
article, with some minor alterations, again.

The Picture Archive Foto Marburg: The German Documentation
Center for Art History
As a result of the extent of the range of tasks in its mission,
the Picture Archive Foto Marburg - German Documentation Center for
Art History is able to position itself in a complex configuration
of museums, state archives, heritage agencies, libraries and photo
agencies, without actually belonging to any of these sectors. The
strategic uniqueness of Foto Marburg persists precisely in this
intermediate position: activities may be unfolded in all
directions, and impulses can be absorbed from all directions. This
multilateral exchange frequently deals with touchy problems such
as those of the preservation and documentation of photograph
holdings in cultural facilities. In the following, some of the
current problematic issues are portrayed within the structure of
the core tasks of Foto Marburg, thus also pointing out practical
solutions for problems which may currently be observed at many
institutions of heritage.

The Picture Archive of the LWL Center for Media of Westphalia:
A Regional Site of Visual Memory
The Picture Archive of the LWL (Landschaftsverband
Westfalen-Lippe) Center for Media of Westphalia looks back upon
more than 75 years of existence. The institution was founded as a
lending archive, which at that time supplied schools and other
educational facilities with sources of pictures, film and sound.
Soon extensive collections of media related to regional studies of
Westphalia were put together. The further history of the archive,
comprising three departments, graphically reflects the transition
of the institution into a modern cultural service provider, which
today supplies the press and publishing houses with image media as
it does scientists and private users. Digitization also found its
way into this archive at an early stage, so that the picture
holdings are increasingly being researched and used
online.
