'Socialism Triumphs', or the 'Official' Perspective: The
Photographic Heritage of the GDR as Reflected in the Holdings of
the Federal Archives
This article portrays the holdings of photographs in the section
'183 General German News Service - Central Image Agency' in the
Federal Archives <www.bundesarchiv.de/ bildarchiv>.
These images represent the 'official perspective' of the
political, social and economic life of the GDR. In addition,
though, the article also describes the 'deficiencies'&emdash;those
areas that did not find a place in this visual legacy. Finally,
the current and future possibilities of the use of the holdings
are outlined.

Der Beitrag berichtet anhand des größten, 360.000 Aufnahmen umfassenden Einzelarchivs der Deutschen Fotothek in der Sächsischen Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Dresden über eine Strategie zur Online-Publikation großer Fotosammlungen. Es wird beschrieben, auf welche Weise der regionalgeschichtlich einzigartige, seit seiner Übernahme in die Fotothek stets überdurchschnittlich nachgefragte Bestand Höhne/Pohl der Öffentlichkeit effizient und in Gänze zugänglich gemacht werden konnte, aber auch welche spezifischen- vor allem überlieferungsgeschichtlich bedingten - Probleme dabei zu bewältigen waren. Aus den für die Groberschließung und Informationssicherung schließlich gewählten Verfahren hat sich mit der unter http://fotothek.slub-dresden.de angebotenen Datenbankrecherche ein Lösungsweg ergeben, der beschritten worden ist, weil sowohl eine Einzelbilderschließung als auch die Digitalisierung von Originalnegativen angesichts der schieren Dimension der Sammlung aus wirtschaftlichen und arbeitsökonomischen Gründen nicht möglich war.
On Establishing in a World of Images: Digitization of the
Press Archive Höhne/Pohl in the Deutsche Fotothek Using the
largest individual collection within the Deutsche Fotothek in the
State and University Library of Saxony in Dresden, comprising
360,000 items, as an example, this article reports on a strategy
for the online dissemination of extensive photo collections.
Material from the Höhne/Pohl holdings, which is singular in
its historical significance in the region, has been requested by
the public to a higher degree than average since its integration
into the Fotothek. The method of efficiently making this
collection accessible as a whole, but also specific problems,
mostly related to consequences of how the photographs had been
passed down, are described. Developed from the procedures of a
rough, general indexing and the preservation of information, the
solution is presented in form of a database search portal under
<http://fotothek.slub-dresden.de>. This path was chosen
since the indexing of individual images and the digitization of
original negatives was not possible in view of the sheer scale of
the collection and economic and workplace-related reasons.
